The polar bear inhabits the coasts and ice floes of the Arctic. It is one of the largest bears, with males averaging eight feet tall and weighing 1000 pounds. Its diet consists mainly of seal, which it supplements with fish, sea birds and eggs, an occasional beached whale, and seasonal berries. Its white coat, of long guard hairs with a dense, insulating under fur, provides protection against the cold. They are strong, swift swimmers with powerful neck and shoulder muscles and partially webbed forepaws. After mating in spring, two cubs are born the next winter in a shallow den the mother digs out of the snow.
