Yorkshire Lugger

Rigged with two masts in lugsail fashion, and an extra mizzen stepped right aft for manoeuvrability - a design often copied by smugglers and privateers.

Developed during the 17th & 18th centuries, the lug rig was superior to square rig particularly in working tides and unpredictable conditions on the shallow Dogger Bank. With the mizzen stepped so far aft, the stern bumpkin is vital for sheeting the overhanging lateen mizzen, a feature that gives greater sail area in an exceptionally Weatherly vessel.
