Starboard Lifeboat Lamp

These spherical lamps were always kept in ships' lifeboats. Their virtue was that they threw out an unobstructed all-embracing light, could be used hanging from a book or hand-held and even had the value of giving off warmth.

Topped by a domed heatshield, they are of all-brass construction. The wick and reservoir unit unscrews with an easy half-turn of the foldaway lower handle. The addition of coloured glass to denote port and starboard is purely decorative and has no navigational antecedence.

They are sometimes known as "globe" or "onion" lamps.
