Blackball Line Tavern Clock

The dial clock made its first appearance in the l720s, in the form of a simple, round faced, black painted clock. The increasingly accurate time tables of the stage coach era needed good time keeping. The numerals of these tavern clocks were gold painted and Roman, on the outside circle were the minutes in Arabic. Hands were made of brass, the minute hand was traditionally counterweighted. Shipping lines, although less reiable than stage coaches in their arrivals and departures, used these clocks as advertising in the taverns and inns of their ports of call. The Black Ball line was the first 'packet' between New York and Liverpool and carried the majority of immigrants to the USA in the 19th century
